CUP TIE DAY.

This year the sides engaged m the final football match m the great professional "-Soccer" competition were from' Birmingham and Sunderland. The interest aroused by their meeting at the Crystal Palace was extraordinary, writes a London correspondent. They are both famous clubs. Indeed, for the' first time m many years it was regarded that the finalists were the best sides engaged m the game. The excitement m Birmingham and Sunderland, at any rate, flung upon London .150 excursion trains and 70,000 passengers. Even the organisation of Cook and Sons was unequal to this, rush, and for the first time m its history that firm had to acknowledge a demand greater than its huge .capacity to supply, and to shut down on orders for accommodation. Most of the thousands travelled 1 by^ight. They swarmed upon London m the early morning. Eour hundred motor 'buses and hundreds of char-a-bancs took possession of some of them; The rest took possession of the London pavements. In every direction the strange apparition' of men from the country met one — rosetted men^ beribboned v men, men attired m curious costumes emblematic of the rival sides. That m itself was a colossal spectacle, aiid it became more progressive as the game progressed, and the subdued roar of expectation .became a thunderous shouting, and most impressive of all when the only goal of the game was scored. Then pandemqnium indeed reigned. The better part of a hundred thousand cloth caps waved m the air, and a deafening 'noise of rattles screeching, bells ringinp and men shrieking and yelling m a.w,rld frenzy of excitement. Cup-tie day is always like that— a mad merry-making.
