Drew failed to test his machine before the flight, and laughingly asked his partner to 1 come for a "iittle joy ride." The latter refused because he Was going to dinner: I)rew was president of the Aviators' Association ot America/, which was formed for- the purpose of promoting safe methods -of flight. ! One death occurred for every 107,000 miles flown during 1912, and one aviator m every 51 was killed.
