WASHINGTON, June ' 6! The State Department admits that. Japan and the United States are as far apart as ever m the effort at securing a settlement of the Californian difficulty. Although Mr_ Bryan, Secretary of State,will not publish tho correspondence that, •has taken place, he has intimated that Japan's protest rests principally on the general, assertion that there has been studied and widespread discrimination against the Japanese m California.
