AN AUSTRALIAN VIEW

(ReceiA'ed June 5, 10.20 a.m.) SYDNEY, June |.
Referring to the defence of Me
Pacific the Herald states: "If the recommendation Air Alien brought back from the conference Avith the British GoA'ernment is tliat New Zealand should create her own naval force in tlie Pacific, we can assure him that he need not fear any attempt by Australia to obtain control. The adoption by New Zealand of a policy of maintaining her own ships, even if it l;e in the first instance only a flotilla of destroyers and submarines, is too important in tlie iril\ir>jsts of both countries, and Canada and the Empire ' also for Australians to be jeopardised by vain talk of CommoiiAvealth predominance of control. Doubtless from ordinary considerations of business prudence there must be cooperation, and probably close, intimate co-operation between" the New Zealand and Australian units.
"The Gommomviealth will certainly give NeAV Zealand every assistance in its poAver. If we enter an arrangement regarding co-operation AA-e enter it as equals". If Canada does, not join the scheme there is all the more need for the closest co-operation between Australia! and NeAV Zealand.
