NEW LYNN COLLISION.
DEMAND FOR PUBLIC INQUIRY.) WAITING FOR AN INQUEST. (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, last night. A deputation from the New Lynn and Henderson districts waited upon the Hon. W. H. Herries, Minister -for Railways, this afternoon with a request that «. public inquiry should be held into the circumstances of the recent accident at New Lynn. They especially asked fo)> a magisterial inquiry, and Mr Handley presented a petition sighed by over 70. people, comprising practically the Whole of tho -passengers on the train which xnei vith the accident. Tbf Minister said th:vy would have to be a Departmental inquiry first. One of the victims ot the accident was unfortunately ve'rv ill, and il- might be neccs-: sary tor an inquest to be held, and that would be a public inquiry. If he got well— and the Minister' hoped he would. — then it would be time for considering the question of a public inquiry. No vend would be served- by duplicated in-» quiries. He knew of no objection to a public inquiry, but could not at present give a definite promise.
