WAIAPU COUNTY COUNCIL.

(Special to Herald.) WAJPIRO i>AY, this day. At the monthly meeting of the Waiapu County Council there were present : Ors A. B. Williams (acting-chairman), Knox, Kemp, Wickstead, Murphy, »nd Oates. Incoming correspondence was dealt with as follows : — From H.M. Trade Commissioner, Wellington, asking the number of motor cars and motor cycles m the county. — The clerk was instructed to reply tliat none had been registered. From Mr Chambers, Havelock North, asking that the name of his manager, Mr C. R. E. Wood, be inserted on the roll m place of his own. — It was proposed by the chairman, seconded by Cr Murphy, and carried that Mr Chambers be informed that the Council do not think that the transfer can be made. It will, however, be pleased to comply with the request if he can kindly advise how it can be done, i From Mr. William O'Regan, Te Araroa station^ asking that something be done to improve the track to s.g.r. No. 70. — Proposed by the chairman, seconded by Or Knox, and carried that the engineer be instructed to interview Mr O'Regan m the matter. From the Hon. A. Ngata, enclosing an account for repairing the road between Rangitukia and , Maraehara. — Proposed by Cr Wicksiead, seconded by Cr Knox, and carried that the Hon. Mr Ngata be written to and informed that the Council will pay his account, and also referring to tne subject of rates. From Mrs Petie Rima, drawing attention to the Waihuka road. — Overseer instructed to have any necessary work done.

From Mr C. Morse, Toklomaru, offering to sell 250 yards of shingle at Tokomar v. — Proposed by the chairman, seconded by Cr Oates, and carried that the shingle be purchased, and the overseer be instructed to tally it to sco the measurements are correct. From the chairman of the Cook County Council, m reference to a deputation to the Native Minister, suggesting arrangements for the stay of the delegates m Wellington. — Proposed by the chairman, seconded by Cr Wickstead, and carried, that the chairman of the . Cook County Council be informed that this Council's delegates, the acting-chairman, Cr A. B. Williams, and Mr Wjlliam O'Ryam, County Engineer, will arrive m Wellington on the* 9th, and be pleased to a-ccede to the arrangements. The Engineer's report was .dealt with. Work at the WaiapUj. bridge, is making good progress. About half the total ferro-ooncrete piles have been driven. Two piers are completed to Corbett's. Another is carried Tip about fyalf-way. In addition to this the greater, part, of the superstructure is ready for placing when the piers ( are completed. . Mr Gilmore, overseer; has considered it advisable to order extra driving beyond that specified m some cases. Of this 1 quite approve, as it is of the greatest importance for the foundation to be as solid as possible. I inspected the road leading to the company s shed at Port Awanui. The big storm about six weeks ago did considerable damage, and I think it necessary to build a concrete wall about one chain long and about three chains of boulders and wire-net-ting along thef front to prevent further damage, and allow the road to be put m cpndition. The pegging and levels for the road from Kopukoko to Makarika have been completed, but the office work is not quite finished. I have made a survey of a deviation road at Makomako. The area cut off from Makomako would be 57ac 2r 14p (plan herewith). Mr McCracken reports that the work required on the Hikuwai bridges has been completed. — Proposed by the chairman, seconded by Cr Wicksteed, and carried, that Cr Kemp be appointed to interview Mr Graham, manager of Makomako, m regard to the valuation of land. The Overseer's report was read and considered. Arising therefrom it was proposed by the Chairman, seconded by Cr Kemp, that no payments be allowed for cai'ting graders. It was proposed by Cr Knox, seconded by Or Wickßteed, and carried, that McK*amara be instructed to clean up the gravel pit. ' It was proposed by the Chairman, seconded by.Cr Kemp, and carried, that all timber for huts at Waiau, Tokomaru, Mata bridge, Manutahi, Mokonui, and Makomako be delivered at once, and a satisfactory design for building huts be prepared, and that enquiries be made as to whether the jbarmers' Co-operative' Co., Tokomaru, will sell or ,lease their driving paddock. If not, the Engineer to look out for a suitable section. The Council then went into Committee to deal with tenders, and on resuming decided that the tender of Mr Brown be accepted for contract 10-3. In ordinary business, it was proposed by Cr Wicksteed, seconded by Cr Oates, and carried, that Williamson and Mathias be written to, and asked •whether they will complete Grove's contract. It was proposed by the- Chairman, seconded by Cr Wicksteed, and carried, that tenders be called for metalling the road between the post-offioe and the foot of the hill by the hospital at Te Araroa. Regarding surface work at Tapuwairoa road, the Overseer stated that he had made arrangements with Hicks to do the work. Cr Kemp reported that a> water-hole on Tokomaru- Mata road wanted repairing. The Overseer was instracted to see into the matter. It was proposed by Cr Wicksteed, seconded by Cr Kemp, and carried, that the Chairman and Engineer go over the route of the proposed deviation at Takapau, and see what was required to be done, so that tenders can be called by next meeting.

It was proposed by Or Oates, seconded by Cr Murphy, and carried, that a resolution passed at the meeting of the Council on January 6 last, m reference to the proportions of the co?t of Mangahawini bridge to be charged to various accounts, be rescinded, and that the following resolution be substituted : "That tne bridge over the Manga hawini stream at Tokomaru be built and the cost of same be charged to the several accounts, as follows — Cost of approaches and metalling, paid for out of loan money, and actual cost of bridge charged^ against County roadt and Tokomaru riding m equal proportions." It was proposed by Cr Wicksteed, seconded by Ct Murphy, and carried, that the acting-Chairman and Cerk sign and the common seal be affixed to eleven debentures of the Waiapu main road and bridge loan. 1 Accounts passed for payment totalled £4517.
