AUCKLAND, last night. The proprietors of the Auckland Weekly News have purchased the Weekly Graphic, • which m future will be incorporated with the Weekly News. The latter is being enlarged, but will retain the old name.
The Hon. Jas. Allen was tendered a civic reception at the Town Hall by the Mayor. There were present the Hon. R. Heaton Rhodes and Messrs Bradney, Lang, and Mander, M.'sP. The Mayor welcomed Mr Allen on behalf of the citizens, and the latter lightly .sketched his experiences at Home, and stated that he was glad to be back. WELLINGTON, last night.
A fire at Lower Hutt this morning destroyed two five-roomed houses. ' The outbreak started m a house occupied by Mr Derosa, and owned by the Wellington Investment Company, spreading thence to an adjoining unoccupied place. The poor water pressure made the task of saving three neighboring houses difficult, but it was managed. No- inauirancos are available.
DARGAVTLLE, last night. The munioipal gas works were opened to-day. The Mayor (Mr Horace Hammond) presided over the funotion, which was largely attended. . 'Speeches were made by Mr F. J. Dargavifle (ex-Mayor) and Mr Blackman (consulting engineer), and a ribbon releasing the governor valve and turning on the gaa mto the mains was cut by the Mayoress. Afternoon tea waa provided for all, and the municipal brass band contributed music
