OPPRESSIVE HEAT.
GRASS FIRES AT TIMARU
(Per Press Association.) DUNEDIN ,this day. The weather was oppressive in pi -edin yesterday. On the flat one instrument recorded 92 degrees in true t shade, while at Opoho the reading was 90. TIMARU, this day. The hottest day of the season was experienced yesterday, caused by a nox -I - west wind, there being half a gale at times. A maximum of 92 degrees of j heat was recorded within the postoffice, and 95 degrees in the shade outdoors. Much vegetation has been withered and scorched. Two or three grass fires are reported, but no damage was done. One was in the back yard of a big drapery shop. Another threatened the railway bridge at Washdyke, and men were sent out by rail, but the fire was extinguished when they arrived. Yesterday was the hottest day experienced at Hastings this summer, and throughout tihe morning the heat was oppressive. The . thermometer showed 90 degrees in the shade at 1 o'clock.
