DISTRICT MATTERS.

WELLINGTON, this day. "I have to advise you that my Council notes with pleasure the many works of interest to the community which you have been instrumental m having carried to a successful issue," are the terms of;«. congratulatory letter Sir .Jas. 'Carroll '.lias received from the town clerk of Wairoaj on behalf of the Wairoa Town' Council. Below are specified a list of matters m respect of which the member for Gisborne has been moving m lately. Incidentally it might be mentioned that he (persuaded the Government to remit the duty on the clock chimes for the new post office. At the instance of the Cook County Council, Sir JaS. Carroll has made representations to the Minister of Public Works, urging the necessity for the. following additional grants : Gisborne riding, traffic bridge over Waipaoa river lit Waerenga-a-hika, £6000 ; Pouawa riding, Riverside road formation and deyiation and small bridge, cost £400, subsidy asked for £ for £ ; Tolaga riding, from Tokomaru to Tolaga, about four miles, subsidy of £500 asked for; Waimata riding, grant for bridge, £250; Ngatapa, special settlement grant of £3600 for metalling. Unexpended subsidy from last year unauthorised: Te Aral Valley, £1600; Miaraetsdha bridges, £1500; Riverside road, £166. Fresh' grants are asked for the above.
