A SUSPECT ARRESTED

After a brief but lively hue and cry m Gladstone road last evening, followed by a. short, sharp struggle, the police effected the arrest of an athletic stranger :f iiij^i-.-t:!;:;,- «_.,; i :. , the police upon a series of charges of house-breaking and burglary.

It appeal's that on .Sunday last the police were apprised of the fact that MiErnest Adair's house m Harris street, Kaiti, was entered sometime on Saturday night, and a. number of articles were abstracted, including a carving knife and fork,, an alarm clock, two razors, two-military hair brushes 1 , and a pair of lady's shoes, of a total value ot" £5.

On Monday morning a. further com plainli was lodged with the police by Mr C. H. Ambridge, another resident of Harris street, 'that his daughter hiici. suspected that she had been followed when proceeding home on Saturday evening. Subseqiiently Mrs Ambridge went into the backyard and proceeded to the wash-house. As she did so she instinctively felt someone was there, and putting out her hand touched an intruder. Startled by his discovery, a man pushed pa'-st her before she had time to raise an alarm, and he beat a hasty retreat to the road. An hour later her attention was drawn to a draught blowing into the house, and proceeding fp the front door she found the same open. To her dismay she di* covered a man m hiding under the bed. Immediately she raised an alarm, calling one of the boarders. The next development m the same line came to light yesterday, when the police were advised by certain cycle dealers that certain bicycles; were being offered for sale at ridiculously low prices, one of which was a Dayton, another a. Flyer, and. the -third was without brand or maker's name, and m this connection they are at present endeavoring to Hud the owners for three such machines.

The movements of a stranger aroused the suspicions of Constable Harold, Mho was on duty m town on Monday night. Subsequently the individual, who turned out' to be the maji afterwards arrested, vouched the information to the constablethat he a commercial traveller and that he had arrived from South on Saturday morning. It was then noticed the stranger was wearing a coat of similar material to that MV Perry was alleged to have lust from his boarding-house on; Monday night. The detective produced a piece of cloth of similar pattern and was proceeding to compare the materials when the man took to his heels and bolted. The police followed. Dashing round Jeune's corner into Bright street, the stranger made a dart into the section on which the Gladstone boarding-house, recently destroyed by fire, formerly stood. Here he fell. with Detective Mitchell on top of him. A sharp struggle ensued, but with assistance the detective succeeded m snipping the "bracelets" on his man. After seeing him safely accommodated at the lock-up, tSergt. Mutton, accompanied by Detective Mitchell, proceeded to the Albion hotel, where the man had boarded.
