The accident -was witnessed by several people, but Groul sank before help could reach him. His vdead body was recovered later. WELLINGTON, this day. An- inquest was held yesterday on the body of John Mcc, aged 63, who died suddenly at the house of his sister late on Saturday night. A verdict of death from hemorrhage of the lungs was returned. OHRISTCHURCH, this day. The five-year-old son of C. Smith, buildei*, has been missing since Friday afternoon. The police have been dragging the river without results. Klenner, butcher, were down on the sandhills shooting, when the gun held by the elder boy was accidentally discharged, and a pellet entered his brother's forehead! The lad, • Francis- Harold Klenner, was standing about fifteen paces away when this occurred. He was immediately brought into town by motor-car and admitted to the public hospital. Invercargill m connection Avith some business matter, and, when about to return to the shore, said '"all right" to the engineer, who started the engine, but looking round a few minutes later found that Mr Mackie was not aboard. The launch returned to the Invercargill, and. a search was made, but no trace of the body was found. It is surmised that Mr Mackie tripped, striking hip head' on something, and that when he fell into the water he was unconscious. Deceased was a son of the late Mr- George Mackie, who for many years carried -on a sawmilling business m Southland, and of Mrs Mackie, who resides at Makarewa; The sawmill M-hich the late Mr Mackie, junr., managed, was the most isolated m the industrial district, but being generously disposed towards the workmen, he nad no difficulty m obtaining labor.
