WIRELESS AT WELLINGTON.
Boisterous weather during the last tw< months % has delayed the erection of th< new wireless telegraph plant on tji< Tinakori Hills above Wellington. At the station is situated on a hill officiallj called Et-akp, it has been given that m appropriate designation, but there seem: to be no reason why it should not hi called the Wellington station. One of the masts is up. It consist* of a tower of Oregon pine timber, froir vehich rise* a topmast, and. above thai again a topgaUantmast, all of 'Oegor pine and- 150 ft. m height, This stvuo ture is held m position by 24 stays ol s Lout steel wire attached to anchors each embedded m a XQ-ton block of con crete. To prevent the stays from rust ing, they a-re covered with spun yarn .sailor fashion. The second mast is* now being put together, and should be read) for erection m the course of a fort night. The two masts will' be erectec 3Cuft. apart, and aHII be connected by a five-wire aerial, with the majn con'duil leading down to the operating-room which is built half-way between the twc masts. _ Etako is rocky m formation ant is therefore* hqt good electric earth. Ti remedy this defect, it is proposed t< make an artificial or static earth, wit! \yires radiating out m all directions, anc joined, up m much the same manner at a spider's, web. An. experiment is horn being, made with such a radial system which it is believed will be" effective The. Rtako station will be fitted with f 2£ kjlowat plant guaranteed to send am receive messages over 300 miles by daj and 6CO miles at night, but really r much better range will be covered b} the station. The generator storage bat teries and a good deal of the wirelesi plant are already stored at the hill to] station. Given a few still days now anc again, it is expected that the new. sta tfpn T,y\\[ b,e ready for work at the enc of next month.
