NEW APPARATUS EOR FREIGHT VESSELS,;- ;; Travel on the high seas is rendered safer than ever before by a new Marconi apparatus which has just been perfected, for use on board freight vessels. Few such -. vessels are equipped with ireless to-day because of the amount of space required for> installation. *i he new apparatus occupies hut a few cubi; feet, and will serve to put cargo ships m communication with passenger ships iii such an emergency' as the Titanic disaster. This announcement was made yesterday by an official of the Marcom Com pany, who said : — "The demand for wireless installations has been growing remarkably form month to month, and, of, course the Titanio disaster did much to emphasise the . vital . need bf such equipment. "During the past month we have received orders m our British office 'alone for. apparatus for eighty-four vessels. Sixteen of these are P. and 0. ships. f'The new wireless apparatus for freight vessels is known as the 'Half K.W. It can transmit waves of 250 to 600 metres. The receiving apparatus receives all waves from 260 to 1600 metres. .< The entire equipment ocupies, floor space of dnly 2ft 2ins by Ift llins, and when not m use can be pushed back into a cabinet out- of the way, A : "Until the present \ve have been able to supply all demands for operators, but m view of the. increasing demand we have decided to open - a training school m London next week m addition to that at' Liverpool. , The top floor of our new quarters m the Strand will be used as a school for some 100 students."
