TOURNAMENT OF WAR.
HISTORIC DISPLAY FOR THE KAISER.
BERLIN, May 29. It is inevitable that when the Kaiser and the firm of Krupp join hands m celebrating a jubilee the festivities should have warlike character.
In August next the great house of Essen will celebrate its centenary, and preparations are m progress to make the occasion an imposing and memorable one.
According to present arrangements the Kaiser, with a large retinue, will arrive _ at Essen by special train from Berlin, and be the guest of the Krupp family at their magnificent residence, Huegel Villa.
After an official reception m the city hall of Essen by the civic' and ecclesiastical authorities, the Kaiser will confer decorations on 900 of Krupp's employees, who have been m "the firm's service for twenty-five years. The great event of the gathering will be a brilliant costume tournament, arranged to represent the passing of the ancient forms of armaUent to the most modern type of death-dealing engines of war, Special attention being given to the development of gunnery. It will begin with a grand military display of the time of the Emperor Maxmilian 1., m which hundreds of employees of the firm, from Herr Krupp von Bohleri-Halbach himself down to the humblest ranks will take part. In the tournament, 250 ex-oflficers of the German army, m shining armor of the period, mounted on gaily caparisoned chargers, will show their prowess 'with sword and lance, while "tt huhdred ladies m tlie costumes of thejHime will contribute to the picturesqueness of tho scene. Tlie display will' culminate m a grand apotheosis of the might of Germany's "mailed fist."
