BUILDING OF FEDERAL CITY.
850,000 ACRES TO BE ACQUIRED. i MELBOURNE, July 5. To enable the Home Affairs Department to proceed with the initial works m connection with the establishment of the. Federal City, the Minister (Mr King O'Malley) HasA decided to acquire compulsorily 85,000 acres of privately owned lands m the territory.- This will be the first step m a largo scheme of land ac-' .quisitiott, for which £600,000 has been passed by the Federal ' Parliament out of the first Federal loan. • The. lands' to be acquired at once include the city site, land traversed by the pipe line to the Cotter riverj and some of the-^land lyiiig' between thie- city site and Qtieahbeyah, and needed for the sewerage' farm and the afforestation area. As soon as funds are- available, the order W'tffff suf(pl^ 61' the .power plant will be issued, and a start made with the dam on the .Cotter river, the pipe line, the pipe , head reservoir, and other works, including.. the. main.s^w^r^ These ■ works it is desired to A complete before the advent of the - population, which will require to be provided for when the actual construction of the city commence*} '
