CARDINALS' HOME AT THE NEXT
ELECTION
ROME, May 27. . The Pope has decided to. build ia new palace. to house the Cardinals whentliey are called on to elect his successor.
When he was himself elected he was greatly struck by the bad accommodation provided for the Cardinals, and decided to make better provision for them on the first opportunity. Tlie new palace is to be built on the site'of H the old Italian mint, which has been acquired by tho Pope. , It v ill have three hundred and fifty rooms, besides kitchens and halls, sufficient f>r the whole College of Cardinals, with their attendants, doctors and cooks. It will be joined, to the Sistine Chapel, where the actual elections take place. ,' The existing Vatican buildings comprise <300 rooms, eight grand staircases; and 200 smaller ones, .several private chapels, and endless corridors.
