HUMAN SACRIFIGE.
CONFESSION OF GIRL PRIESTESS
NEW YORK, April 5. A frail "half-blood" girl, Clementine Barnalet by name, who acts as priestess of a negro "church of sacrifice,"' has made the startling 'confession vto the police of Lafayette; Louisiana, that she is responsible- for 17 of 35 murders which m recent months have terrorised the colored populace of the town., Without a' trace of emotion the murderess explained that she belonged to aj ; sect which believed it was of vital import? ance for the development of the negro race that all negro families numbering five or more members should be exterminated. Armed with a charm furnished by the high priest of the church, the girl and her assistants, two men and one woman, invaded the homes of the doomed families and struck them down with axes. A frightful series or murders has been committed after midnight on the last Saturday m each m'onthj and m each instance the assassins made good their escape, after scrawling on lhe' wall of the room where the slain lay the followirig weird notice : —
"When 'he maketh the .Inquisition for Blood, he forgetteth not the cry of the' humble. The Human Five."
The authorities 'until to-day's corifessiou were .unable to obtain any clue to the "Human Five," whose coming kept the negro population m. a state of constant fear. The girl ; Clementine furnished the name, of ' her woman accomplice, but resolutely refuses to divulge the ideritityj of jbjer^male. .-assistants.
