The schooner Americana, which left Newcastle on December 4, met a succession of heavy gales, r arid sails and spars were lost,- while the cabins were flooded. ;' , : : " On January 7 Captain Benson went into, the galley and remonstrated with, the Japanese cook about sbme trouble. Whatever ; happened is not known beyond what the cook says, and that Is that the captain knocked hnri down m [the galley, and that he reached for his revolver and shot the captain five times, three shots entering hiscfltSSt, one m the shoulder, and one /m 'tne forehead. The captain fell out on the deck and died within 20 minutes. ..--. .y. , When the Ariiericanri arrived at 'Frisco the Japanese cook was m irons, and was; handed over to the authorities. The captain's body was buried -■ at sea. He leaves, a wife andVfamily. at 'Frisco, and was only 45 years of age.
