A project is being formulated' by bankers and- certain coal-carrying companies in the United States to supply steamers with American coal along the routes to be traversed in connexion with the Panama Canal/ as it is anticipated that if American coal can be supplied there at lower prices than those changed for British coal on the Suez Canal the traffic may be induced to use the Panama route instead of the Suez Cfejiat in cases where the voyage can b^ made in the same length of time. The cost of the scheme is at nearly $5,000,000. It includes the provision of a large coaling station at Panama or Colon to be equipped with loading and unloading machinery and ship repairing plant.
