TRAMWAY ON KAITI.

FROM THE BRICK WORKS. An application from Mr W. Gordoh was placed before the Cook County Council to-day for permission, under the provisions of 'the Tramways Act, to. construct a tramway on the side of Huxley •road, Kaiti, from the Gisborne Brick Company's works, section 294, Kaiti, to deLautour road. .The' proposed train, it was stated in the application, willibe of 2ft 6in gauge, with 201b steel /rails, of similar construction to 'the Borough Council's tramway to Gentle Annie quarry. Mr Gordon added : "I find that it is practically impossible to cart bricks from the Kaiti works in the winter time ; in fact, it is almost unsafe at present. 1 am sure that you will agree that the tram I propose to put down will save your Kaiti roads from becoming impassible during the winter." ' The accompanying plan provided for a tram elong Huxley road to deLautour road corner. The Engineer stated that Mr Gordon proposed putting down a horse tram, and he understood intended approaching fiie Borough Council with a view to obtaining permission to extend the tram right down to the site of the proposed j new Waimata. bridge. The clerk stated that the only ques- j tion was whether permission could be granted for a tramway for hire. The Engineer, in the course of further discussion, explained that Mr Gordon had taken a contract for carting three million bricks for the new hospital, and his idea was to get these and other bricks down the tramway. The proposal met the hearty approval of the Council, in view of the 'saving to the roads, and it was suggested that if permission could not be legally given to Mr Gordon, the latter might do it through the company, which would, be permissive. v. The chairman said they would offer every assistance, and the clerk was authorised to consult the # county solicitor and to give every assistance. The clerk stated that the matter would have to be advertised, and objections considered next meeting. It was agreed that if the solicitor's opinion was favorable there was nothing to stop the applicant from going ahead with the tramway.

The chairman (Cr Kenway) said the contractors for the new hospital had asked for permission to lay a tramway along Clayton's road from the Ormond road corner at Mangapapa,: over which it was intended to haul the material for the new hospital. Permission had been granted provisionally upon the Council's approval and 1 that no obstruction took place to traffic on the main road.
