It is rumored m Noumea, m circles which are usually well-informed, that a proposal is being seriously considered by i France and Great Britain for a division of the New Hebrides. The women of Canada have been agitating foiva dower law, giving a third of a man's possessions to his wife, so that he cannot leave all his money away from her. An influential deputation of women waited upon members of Parliament, but the Canadian politicians laughed at the 'deputation, and said that a petition of non- voters was not M r orth the paper it was written on. Their attitude has naturally roused the ire of the deputation and its supporters, who, however, are powerless since they x have no vote.
