PATHE PICTURES.

Another splendid set of animated pictures was presented before a large audience at His Majesty's Theatre last night by the Pa the Picture Company. It was a happy, thought that. prompted the proprietary to present the lady patrons with souvenirs, particularly as the souvenir took the form of a fan, which was most acceptable on account of the very hot night. The programme was one of the best screened m Gisborne for some time, and contained a. fine range of subjects, which provided a most successful and delightful entertainment. "Esmeralda," from Victor Hugo's powerful work of fiction, entitled "Notre Dame de Paris," formed the star film. It was an excellent pourtrayal of the pathetic story of the beautiful "Queen of the Vagabonds." The acting and scenery, m fact the whole of the conditions surrounding the drama, were of an exceedingly high order. The representation was produced m two parts. Iri the first part the story of the selection of Esmeralda as "Queen of the Vagabonds," her rescue from the brutal hands of the villlain, Claude Frollo, alleged priest, . by the oaptain of the king's guard, and the continual hounding of the unfortunate girl by Frollo umtil the death of Phoebus, who was 'murdered by the priest, was vividly depicted, this part closing with Esmeralda shown to be almost demented with grief at the death of her lover, which took place m her presence. Then follows the arrest of the girl for the murder, and a narration oi the awful tortures and sufferings she is subjected to under the direction of the priest becauise of her refusal of his approaches, culminating m her execution and- the death 6f Frollo, who is hurled from the top of the cathedral by Inasemodo, the crippled bell-ringer, who throughout the piece proved a valued friend to the unfortunate girl. Those present who had read. the story were m a better position t-> appreciate the production, which no oc bt will induce many others to beco.. c further acquainted with the work. "Out from the Shadow" and "Romance of Hefty Burke" were two other dramatic numbers which • were ably screened. Some fine scenery was to be -found iri the item, "British North Borneo," whilst a picture showing various events fit "Sport m America" was most interesting, especilly the sensational incident of the i „.vay collision. - The comic element was u-ell represented m two films, entitled 'An Eventful Tandem Ride" and "Father t Dress Suit." The programme will be repeated to-night.
