1911 INFLUENZA.

AFFECTING THE HEART

LONDON, October 21. Mr Bodkih, the barrister, was taken ill at the Old Bailey yesterday, and the case upon which ho was engaged had to be postponed. Upon inquiry last night it was stated he was suffering from influenza. * Influenza is again prevalent m London. There is nothing very extraordinary about the epidemic this year, except the fact tliat it more particularly affects the muscles of the heart, leading to .sudden and sometimes alarming collapses. It is natural that this form of influenza should attack adults more than children, since the former are often leading a life of veiy high pressure. "I have had cases this autumn," said a West End doctor last night, "m which men have* been, attacked- upon reachinohome after a busy day jimt as they were going upstairs. fTEhe little extra effort of climbing the stairs has been the last straw. The best treatment for the patient is to send him to bed. at once, keep him warm, and not let him eat too much. In a horizontal position the heart has not so much work to do and is better able to recover itself and combat the influenza, toxin. The fact that th© heart is affected becomes quite evident when the patient stands up, the pulse immediately rising. immmmmm^am^^^mwai^aa
