CHEAPER CABLES.
RING-CONTROLLED LINES. .LONDON, December 1. ! The reduction of the press cable ratea across the Atlantic is the principal business to which consideration will be given by the Empire Press Union next year. The Union "desivps the present rates reduced 50 per cent. It has shown that cables can bo sent from Montreal to Sydney for 4d a word, while messages despatched by, the ring controlling the linos from Britain to Canada, which is only a third of .the distance to Australia, are charged at the vate of 5d a word. At a meeting of tho Union it was pointed out that reduced oharges for"commercial messages were vital to imoerial unity, and the necessity for having the press services exempt from alien control was strongly emphasised.
