EXPRESS TRAIN IN PERIL.
DISASTER AVERTED BY HAIR'S
BREADTH,
LONDON, Sept. 1. An express train from Scarborough to Bridlington, carrying 200 passengers, had a, narrow escape from disaster late on Wednesday night. The train was travelling at 50 miles. an hour down a gradeint. between Flambor ough and Btidlington when the fore axle of the engine tender broke m the middle. A wheel attached to the broken axle missed ihe metals and for 500 yards fouled the permanent way, unearthing sleepers and smashing the iron chairs which secure the sleepers. The enginedriver was afraid to apply the brakes suddenly owing to the steepness of the gradient and the danger of throwing the train over the embankment. He sue ceeded, however, m stopping the train 20 yards from a viaduct over the highway close to Bridlington. The line was blocked until about noon yesterday. Railwaynien stated that the express had a miraculous escape, and that if a dislodged sleeper had fouled the metals the train might have been thrown over the embankment.
