RACING IN AUSTRALIA

The big. spring meeting opened' tlje racing sefti?oli under very pleasurable " circumstances, ihe favorable' season was responsible for picturesque ; . surroundings and ,good tracks. The racing therefore was advantageous to competitors, and ideally springlike conditions prevailed. The programme was partib'ul'ariy attractive, as the best horses recently racing at Randwick were enabled to compete owing 'to there being no clashing between the meeting daj's. The results are looked for as a guide lo biff events of the next fortnight, especially ift the weight for age races. The Governor. Sir John .Fleetwood Fuller, was present with a large party; ahd thei'e was the biggest "Guineas": crowd on record. The Wcing was good, a great struggle between Malt King and Comedy King for the Caulfield Stakes providing the best finish seen between weight for age horses for same time. Malt King's performance was particularly fine. He Was two lengths behind' Comedy King at the half distance, nnd it opwewred as if the black left the real fight VAther late, but he finished splendidly, and received a great reception .on returning to scale.
