The proposals introduced by Mr D'avey, M.P., on Wednesday, into -the Tramways Bill are by : no means received with equanimity by thpse' responsible for the control of the Dunedin tramways. Mr Burnett, m conversation with a reporter, referred to the ''.large' number of tramway 1 concessions' granted* lately > arid added the opinion that ' if regulations like the proposed one" "were tp be imposed, it avould simply mean increased fares. He considered it quite possible that might comp m any case, as they were losing , money on the trams now. Mr- S. S. My 6ra ,>, chairman of the tramways c'pjnnfyttee,' said : '.'Mr Davey"s amendment, >would only ajffect eleven cars out of 43 m ihe service, provided the, open cars cbulc], dhly be reconstructed, but ,if it is cortipulsory that all combinations be altered it will involve an alteration of 29 cars, at an expense " l'unning into many thousands. Cars m Dunedin and elsewhere hsd already been passed as safe by responsible officers pf the Government, and it is undoubtedly a hardship on the authorities that private members can step m with amendments; which put bodies to thousands pf. pounds of "expense in making unnecessary alterations. The cost of altering oars m Dunedin would be less than m other centres, but it is estimated roughly that it would be at least £40 per car. No serious accident has occurred to conductors on open cars here.
The profits of '. the City Corporations m the various trading departments for the. half year ended - September total £15,489, against £13031 for the corresponding period of last year.
INVERCARGILL, this day. The Chamber of Commerce yesterday afternoon decided, to co-operate with the Dunedin Chamber m its efforts to persuade the Government to lay the second Australian' cable between Melbourne and the Bluff.
