HAWKE'S BAY SCHOOLS.
' (Special to Herald.) NAPIER, this day. In his annual report to the Minister of Education, the chahman of the Education Board says that the number of schools m operation at the end of .tit year 1909 m.is .122. During 1910 »v were opened, and six', were closed, leaving 121 (including 11 household schools) at the end of the year. The teachers eipplqyed m December, 1910, numbered 306. ' Of 'these .60 were pupil .teachers and hi no M*ero probationers. Fifty-nine of the 'adult 'teachers wer uncertificated. The Bonrd regrets that it was unable -to obtain the services of a sufficient number of young persons qualified fir appointment as probationers. Seven positions * remained unfilled throughout tlie year. At the end of the year the number of scholars on the roll Mas 10,290. • The average attendance for the year Mas 8969, and the percentage of attendance was 80.9. the highest 'yet attained m the district. There were 653 Maori and half-caste scholars m attend; ance at 48 schools.
