Rugby Cup contests start at the Victoria Domain to-morrow. Two senior matches will be played, V.M.C.A. v. V.M.P. and Kaiti-City v. United. It is expected that both games will be well contested. Mr L. Robinson, the champion featherweight boxer of New Zealand, leaves Gisborne on Sunday for Australia. He goes first to Tasmania, where he will accept any challenges offering. Mr T. Parke, the amateur feather-weight champion, accompanies him as trainer. Mr Robinson will be tendered a smoke concert to-night, and a presentation will be made to him' by local admirers. He had been ill for seme time, but had rallied recently. A grand nephew, Basil Forster-Pratt, died at Palmerston North at 8 that morning of appendicitis, after a very brief illness. The death uas a shock to Mr Riddiford. Mr Riddiford's body will be taken to his old home at the Hutt for the funeral. Mr Riddiford was the first child baptised m New Zealand by Bishop Selwyn, and his father, who arrived m 1839, brought out with him the first house erected at Pipitea Point. "King" Riddiford leaves three sons and three daughters. He was easily the wealthiest man m New Zealand, and has large areas intact m Hawke's Bay and the Wairarapa districts. |
