EAST COAST RAILWAY.

(To the Editor of the Herald.) Sir,— i shall be glad if you Will allow me space to remove a misconception j that seems to have arisen Avith regard I to the action taken by t,ho deputation that Avaited upon tho Minister for Public Works on the 20th inst. This deputation did not advocate any particular routo; they simply asked that an engineer bo sent to thoroughly examine certain routes that they thought would I bettor servo th© interests of the Dominion than the route at present being surveyed. If the railway is intended to servo the. interests of Gisborne only, then Manga- i poike may be found to bo the best ; but if, as we believe, the railway is to be the Fast Coast Main Trunk line, as designated m Wellington, then we cannot m justice be blamed for asking that certain routes be examined, nor •is it fair that Mr Lysnar or Mr Townley should condemn a route. they have never seen. Tho Minister of Public Works did not consider our request unreasonable, for the engineers are to report upon the different routes, and until this report is received avo are not m a position to judge one Avay or the other.—l am, etc., A. G STEELE. , [No one has suggested that tho railAVay Avas meant to serve the interests of Gisborne only, but it is claimed that it should bo a Gisborne- Wairoa-Napier line.]
