All sporting fixtures were postponed to-day on account of the rain. Messrs Redstone and Sons' coaches leave for Tiniroto -Wairoa, Morere-Wai-roa and for Pakarae, Tolaga, Tokomaru and Waipiro on Monday next, at 7 a.m. The City Band contest guarantee fund, which closed at noon to-day, has reached £1500. The intention at the outset was to try to get a guarantee totalling £10( »: ,-„ ,_, fl , , .«■ V/K^V Word was received by. telephone this afternoon that .the. 'stock sale at Ruakii turi had been abandoned owing to the scarcity of buyers, the attendance evidently being affected by the weather conditions. Despite this drawback, however, there were good yardings. There will be a general exit of racehorses from Gisborne to-morrow. The following horses are amongst those being shipped for Napier by the Mokoia : Te Arai, Ruaparaha, Birkline, Stourton, Cauldron, Voetgang, Cork, Monsieur Soult, Raupare, Miss Murphy, Lord Possible, Obscurity, three others, and a yearling. Tho sewerage construction work has been pushed on during the past week with good results. The Childer's road trench has been opened up from tho Borough Council corner almost up to tm» Presbyterian manse at Cobden street. A good showing was also made with' drain laying. Work, however, was suspended to-day by the rain. , Mr E. G. Loten, instructor of agriculture to the Hawkes Bay Education Board arrived at Gisborne this morning. To-day Mr Loten was engaged • making arrangements for a Saturday morning's science class for pupil teachers, and other matters regarding agricultural qualification. He returns to Napier tomorrow. The Chief Postmaster advises that the maihnan from Ponana and Arataha was unable to reach Tolaga Bay to-day owing to the creeks being flooded. Exceptionally heavy rain has fallen during the past 24 hours along the Coast. Tokomaru Bay advises that owing to the flooded state of the rivers the mail from Tokomaru Bay to Huirua did not come m forward this morning. It will be despatched as soon as the weather permits. A meeting of the Gisborne Oil Com- - pany was held this afternoon, when there were present : Messrs Lysnar (chairman)," Harris, Arundle, Clark, Parker, Barry, Adair, and Oman. The manager was also present, and reported that the formation was verjr much better at present, and that the casing was now down to 1485 ft. The tools were working Bft below the casing. This was the first time he had been able to get tFem so far below the casing for the past 300 ft. Other matters of business were transacted, a satisfactory report being received regarding the taking un of the balance of the shares.
