WOOD OR BRICK.

IS IT AN-, "ADDITION?" The proposed extension of several premises m the -business area of the town has been hung up owing to the enforcement of the building by-la wS, necessitating construction m brick. One of I these cases came before tho Borough ! Council last night. I Mr F. J. Wilson, architect, wrote submitting plans of proposed alterations to Dunlop's buliding, corner of Lowe street and Read's quayj which, he stated, the building inspector declined to grant a permit for, the same being m the brick area. He pointed out that it was 1 proposed to raise i the roof over the auction mart . for a second storey, and that it was not<*'an*. addition m: the true sense of the -word, as the walls were already m position. He also pointed out that he had' been given to understand by a former servant of the council that there would be. no . hesitation m the granting of a permit. The Thorough Engineer submitted a report on the subject, stating that he considered it must be considered as an alteration and addition which must conform to the by-laws requiring construction m brick. Healso pointed out that tho by-law provided for a division wall being inserted m all buildings of a greater frontage than 82ft 6in. .The portion of the building under discussion had a frontage of 105 ft. No barrier existed i to confine a fire: to any one portion of the building. He could not recommend jthe granting of .the application. j [ The matter was referred to the Workp j Committee, with ppwer to act.
