ALLECED ATTEMPTED MURDER.

(Per Press Association.) DUNEDIN, last night. At the Police Court to-day, John Webster was charged with having, on August 20th, attempted to murder George Hubbard, and 'also with having attempted to murder his wife, Maria Webster. Evidence for the prosecution was to the effect that the accused went to the house where his wife was staying, and demanded to see her. She refused to go to the door at first, but afterwards consented to do iso. Accused waaited his wife to go outside, but she (refused. Shortly afterwards accused pointed a revolver at Mrs Webster, •but Downes, occupier of the house, caught the revolver and forced it over accused's shoulder. A struggle ensued, accused freeing himself and then putting the revolver in his pocket. Downes demanded possession of the revolver, but accused threatened to blow his brains out. Accused then went up the street. . Later on he was overtaken by George Hubbard, who said he believed accused had firearms on him. Accused replied in the negative, but Hubbard expressed his intention of searching him. According to Hubbard, accused then pointed the revolver at his stomach, but Hubbard knocked his hand down, and the bullet went between Hubbard's legs.. When accused was arrested he handed the police sergeant a letter containing his will. Accused, who reserved his defence, was committed for trial on each charge. Application for bail was refused.
