DEATH OF ADMIRAL THOMAS.
A San Francisco correspondent writes that glooriij was cast over the departure of the '-American fleet from San Francisco by the sudden death of Admiral Charles M. Thomas in California, .-shortly. af ter ijV he had been relieved' of command I ' of the squadron, arid after lie had I successfully . brought the ships around ,to '.'the Western, coiist. While Admiral I Evans was nominally in chargei, hie | health was so poor that the actual work fell to the little, smiling sea veteran,who endeared himself to the officers and men, and who ably represented the American Government in the various hospitable functions tendered by . the countries visited. Admiral Thomas was about to return East, when the last sum--monsdme.- He died of heart failure i without warning; and it is thought that the strain of the last few months -was J responsible for the end. '
