FIRE AT MATAURA.
(Per Press Association.) GORE, this day. By -a fire at Ma laura three business places in Bridge street were burned opposite those destroyed last week. The nre started in the back of J. Thome's bootmaker's shop, which had been, occupied as a dwelling, but is at present unoccupied. 'Ihe lire spread K to T. F. Quitter's, fruit and 'confectionery shop. These "plaic.es were destroyed, but Quitter's cordial factory at the rear was saved, and B. Downe _ blacksmith and implement shop adjoining was burned. This contained a considerable amount of machinery, owned by Mr J. Lowden. sen., and leased by Mr Downes. The fire is supposed to have arisen from a defective chimney. . ■
The 'following are insurances on the fife at Mataura this morning : — Lowden, senr. : Machinery and plant. £150 in the Royal ; building, £2CO in the Royal ;■ loss above that, £3GO. Downes:. stock, £103 in the United ; loss above that, £60. Quilter: £ICO in the South British; stock, £2CO in the Royal : the factory of ths latter was saved; loss above insurance, £70. Thom has no insurance; loss £100. T. and J. MacGibbon: Buildings, £150 in the National; loss above that, £150.
