MINERS' WAGES.

THAMES, this day. A conference of representatives of the mining companies operating at Thames • Karangahake, and Coromandel' districts, and the Thames Miners' Union, which possesses -a large number of workers in each district, was held yesterday. The business was to discuss conditions, fix tlie rate' of pay of miners and others, ihe leading companies Were represented, the delegates from the Union being the president, vice-president, and secretary. The Union- a__ked for an increase of pay lor .miners, blacksmiths, and winding enginers. The proceedings were of a most amicable nature, the true spirit of conciliation being' shown. Both sides unanimously (decided to a grant of increase of wages as under : Miners from 8s to 8s 6d, blacksmiths 9s to 9s 6d, winding engineer's 9s to 10s. This is practically the same, rates as prevailing m other parts of the ' goldfields where men are working under an award of the Arbitration . Court. The proceedings were of a most cordial nature throughout. The opinion was expressed tthat owing to the presence of miiierals m the water and the conditions'underground an increaisc to the men was in every way justified.
