EDUCATION BOARD.

NAPIER, this day. Ihe Education Board, met last night. The Chairman's statement showed that the resignations hadi been,- received ' of Miss. HraiiwellXMotu^ and Mr Powell, Gisborrie. Appointments: Miss McBretney, assistant, Waipiro Bay; Miss M. Hunt, secondary assistant, disborne. The second teacher (Miss Faubert) at Kaiti was absent tlirough. illness. The Building and Finance Committee made the following recommendations, dealing with school correspondence, Avhich were adopted :'— Gisborne : Boarding verandah declined ; further information required regarding water connections. Makauri: Extension of time granted for paying for the last wood shed. Motu: Grant of shelter shed and fencing deferred. Tokomaru: Grant towards permanent improvements, deferred. Tolaga Bay: Subsidy of £ for £ to £6 granted for clearing scrub. Wairoa : Addition to school declined. Matawhero: £7 granted for shelter shed. Miscellaneous : Tha Board granted permission to place copies of the Ten Commandments in schools. The attention of committees to be drawn to the liability in connection with fires. Y - :

Messrs^Tanner and McLernon were appointed School Commissioners.

Mr Morgan drew attention to remarks concerning certain schools in the inspector's reports, and suggested that committees' attention be drawn by circular! After discussion Mr Morgan withdrew his motion on the. subject, stating that his •object had been * attained by drawing attention, to tlie matter.

Ries- motion in. connection! with tlie amendment ofrtlie regulation^ governing school iiours was ruled out of order; owing to six' months being rea.uired to elapse before, the regulations may, be 'altered'after coming into force. Pastor Ries gave notice* of the' same motion for next- meeting, when it.. will be in order.

Mr Morgan gave notice to move at next meeting: "That the mover and the inspectors be appointed to draw up. a. report on the advisabieness of making arrangements by .which teachers who have not obtained certificates, and are- in charge of schools, -could be sent either to a training school or to'some of the larger schools for a period of, say, tliree 'months-, to get instruction in school management." Mr Morgan brought up the matter of the Kaiti school contract, and consideration was deferred till next meeting, to allow Mr Darton to furnish a report. . Mr Morgan pointed out thai by an alteration of the regulations issued by the Department, the capitation on cookery classes had been reduced from < 15s t0. 12s 6d . Tliis would' mean a considerable loss to the Board, as they had previously made their arrangements for the year on a 15s basiv. — Representations to be made to the Department on':,the matter.
