THE MAYORALTY

(To the Editor of the Herald.)

Sir,— l take great pleasure in replying to "Timbuctoo's" letter in last night's paper anent the Mayoralty. He criticises Dr Williams in twelve sections, and imagines he lias utterly bespdiled him in all his elaims to be elected. First, lie says Dr Williams claims to be progressive, but a mim is known by the company he keepff. Now, if a man is t6 be judged by the company lie keeps a® to Iris progress! veness, where does the other candidate.- come, in? ' Are his satellites of a progressive mind? Secondly, is Dr Williams Or Mr Lysnar the greatest champion of sanitation? Thirdly, which' of the candidates attempted to block the water supply for Gisbonie, and caused so many scenes. in the Council Chamber? Fourthly, Cr Williams has truly not done any tiling in the past on* the metal question, nor has any other councillor, owing to various handicaps, but he has given evidence of an attempt to obtain a metal supply for the future. Fifthly, why blame Cr Williams for the unresponsiveness of the whole Council? Sixtldy, I don't think Cr WiUiams intends to accomplish everything in a day, but his policy can be detailed. Seventh, Mr Lysnar's doings on another public body, i.e. , the Farmers' Union, haive nothing to do with the. Mayor's duties, wor has the telephone service. Eighth, if the Mayor of the town Ims nothing to do 'with... the Old Men's. Home or Hospital, who has? Ninth, the supporters of Dr Williams are not the ones /who are opposed to the outer liarbor ; they were opposed to the inclusion of certain districts in the raiting area., and were able ty> convince Parliament of the injustice of .such districts being included. Tenth, as to the river reserve. "Timbuctoo" need not worry about the money. It will not cost him anything, but I daresay he or his children will be very glad to have the privilege of using it.* A most desirable idea I think it is. Eleventh, the Mayor of the town would have no difficulty ih' doing a good deal more than "Timbuctoo" on the Railway League. Twelfth,, the progress of the 'town. 'will certainly not increase if we have such narrow-minded citizens aa "Timbuctoo- 7 trying to put tha blame on .to Dr Williams and his supporters for all past failures and lethargy of public bodies in Gisborne. 1 "Timbuctoo," you liave only looked on one sideof the question. Look at.it in a. broader light, or, you will only be fitted to be Mayor of OKITU.
