TO THE BURGES«ES OF THE BOROUGH OF GISBORNE. T ADIES AND GENTLEMEN,— In response to the ! request of a liirgc number of Ratepayers', ( I beg to offer you my services as Mayor during the coming year. My vieAVS generally on Afunicipal mat- ■• tor? are strongly Progressive. Tlie most important question at present before the Council is that of Sanitation, m which I take a very keen interest. I ( am earnestly desirous of initiating; a Drainage system m the more congested parts of the Borough, which may be ex- ( tended to embrace other portions as «■ necessity arises. The Water Supply must be pushed to a x successful completion, and those streets not already reticulated must be provided for as speedily as possible. There is no doubt that our streets and roads generally are m a deplorable condi- i tion. Many are without metal at all, t and m many more the metal is worn out. The Avhole question resolves itself into that of obtaining a cheaper and more , regular supply of metal. I shall endeavor to develop the sources of metal we already possess, and also to procure additional* supplies'. The mimbor of street lamps should be considerably augmented. I «-m m favor of the Municipal control of tJio Gasworks, .and of bunging the Fire Boards' Act into operation. I consider that the time lias arrived when Gisborne should have a continuous telephone service, m order to bring it hi line with centres of equal importance. I am strongly of the opinion that provision requires to be made for cases of chronic disease, such as uuronot be dealt - with m our present Hospital, and' also tliat the present accommodation at the Old Men's Home should be extended, so as to include both sexes. If you elect me, I shall have a seat on t the Hiarbor Board. lam m ! faivor of the -construction of a<n efficient . Outer Harbor, believing that better shipping facilities would materially advance the welfare of the town and district. I , endorse the action of the Board: m pro- - curing tlie advice of eminent engineer?, and m referring the plans to the marine superintendents of the companies trading to the port. I shall mse every endeavor to'liave the matter placed fairly and squarely before the Ratepayers as early as possible. I am anxious that further reserves should be secured for the people, and especially desire to obtain a Public Reserve up th© Waimata. river for tlie use of -boating parties. ; I heartily advocate that our Railway should be pushed on without hurtlier dolay. When the forests are tapped an export timber trade will be developed, which will result m materially reducing . ( freights on coal • and other imports, thus reducing the cost of living m Gisborne. I have the utmost faith m the future . development of Gisbom©, and should you honor me by election, it will be my con- • stant endeavor to promote and advance its interests by every means m my power. My watchword .will ever be "Progress." Yours faithfully, ' J. W. WILLIAMS. 419 Land ■, CLOSE TO AUCKLAND FAT STOCK MARKET. FiRST-CLASS SHEEP RUN i IN THE WAIKATO: ' 1 HKC\ A<3RE .
