A stock train ran'into a "number of horses on the railway between Napier and Port Ahuriri at about 11 o'clock on Saturday night, killing four of them and injuring one. Jt is stated that the trustees under the will of the late Hon. J. T. Peacock have presented the .Canterbury Society, of Arts with a sum of £500, to be on expended oh pictures by European artists for the permanent collection. At a meeting of the executive of- the Engine Drivers' Union on Friday evening, a letter was read from the Christchurch Tramway Board, stating that it had decided riot to recognise the claims of several engine drivers for back pay. In August, 1906, the Board was convicted of a breach of award m paying less than the minimum wages, it being a party to the award. The back, pay, amounting to nbout £200, has never been paid, although repeated applications have been made by the men. It was decided to take legal proceedings, and a ballot was taken to determine which of the men should be selected for a test case. -H DUNEDIN, last night. General complaint is made by practically the whole of the grain and produce merchants m Dunedin at what they consider the totally inadequate shipping service between this port and northern ports. It appears there is an exceptionally heavy demand from the north for wheat, oats, potatoes, chafif, and hay, and while northern buyers are clamoring for supplies, local merchants cannot get lx>ats to take them away. Merchants complain that for the last three weeks enormous quantities of produce have been left on the wharf. The shipping companies concerned — the Union Steam Ship Coinpanv and the Huddavt-Parkei- Company—assert that everything possib'e has been done to cope with the exceptionally heavy trade. The pressure, has been felt at other ports, and the demand for space on boats has been very heavy. They anticipate that the coming week will see everything cleared away. Provision has been made for the despatch of 1000 tons of grain by the Wimmera on Tuesday, aud the company expect to, clear everything offering by this boat; it will be chaff and hay. Consignments will also be sent by the Corinna to-day, the Maheno on I'uesday, the Monowai on Thursday, and the Maitai on Sunday.
