The annual fixture between the Gisborne and Poverty Bay Rowing Clubs, m connection with the Licensed 1 ' Victuallers' Association's shield took place to-day tinder, glorious -weather circumstances;. To enable the public to witness . the events to better advantage, the races took place m the afternoon, and: #be fixture was turned into a regatta.; Besides the races for the shield there l were races m the Gisborne Club's 'maiden sdulls and an cXV hibition of rowing by • W. 4 Webb, the world's , champion sculler, y? ho, with Rees Jones, the .lpcal, champion^ fowied down the Waimata. Tlie rconibined' committee had all the -arrangements well in -hand, and everything, passed .off very 'successfully. The bridges and river banks were thickly lined with spectators. Mi- R. D. B. and A. D. Robinson acted as starters, and Mr G. B, Oman judge, whilst Mr , W. Hackett gave entire satisfaction as. umpire, who was conveyed over the course m the Harbor Board's launch, kindly lent for. c the occasion. /> The senior race for ;.the shield was the first on the programme, the crews being.: , Gisborno Club : P. This -was an easy win, for PpverJLjr Bay, who came- home ten lengths to ,#xe good.
