tm , . DEATH OF AN AMBASSADOR. (Press Assn. — By Telegraph.-— Copyright) (Received March 21, 8.30 a.m.) ' LONDON, March 20. The death is announced of the Right Hon. Sir R. N. O'Connor, British Ambassador at Constantinople. [Sir N. R. O'Connor was an Irishman of ancient race, who had been 43 years in the diplomatic service, and won success at Sofia, Pekin, St^ Petersburg, and at his recent post,, to which he was appointed in 1898. He was 65 years of age, and entered the diplomatic' service in 1866. He was attache to the Embassy at Berlin in 1867-70, subsequently secretary at the Hague, Madrid, Rio de Janeiro, and Paris ; he. became secretary of the Legation in Pekin /and subsequently was secretary and Charge d' Affairs there. He was stationed at Washington from 1885 :to 1887, and then was appointed Political Agent and Cpnsul-General at Bulgaria. In 1892 he became Minister at Pekin, and from 1895 to- 1898 was Ambassadoi* at St. Petersburg, representing the British Government at the coronation of the Emperor of Russia, Nicholas ll.] MELBOURNE, March 20.
