WELLINGTON, last night. , Determined^ efforts were put forth with great success' to make Hospital Saturday and Sunday collections m Wellington this year eclipse all previous, collections. Yesterday the passer-by was accosted at every oorner by ladies armed with Red. Cross labelled boxes, and the persistent collectors were rewarded with a. totsum of £249. • In addition to this, boxes from, the various hotels have yet to be emptied. So far it is impossible to estimate what this afternoon's demonstration on the Basin v -reserve will yield. The various bands of the city and suburbs gave their services, and contributed an, excellent programme of music. There was a very large. attendance of the public, estimated at 5000 or 6000;. and: as the,-, übiquitous lady collectors ' were as attentive to their task as they were yesterday, a total collection of a very substantial amount is assured. Th* crowd this afternoon was ' addressed by the Hon. T. W. Hislop (Mayor of Wellington) and ther Hon. C. M. Luke, M.L.O. (chairman of the Hospital Trustees).
