Al the Feildiii^ races last week bookmakers did not play their calling, the conditions being considered too hard. These were : That a fee of £20 be charged for each day of the races, and that the bookmakers be confined to portions of the ground to be selected by the committee m the saddling paddock, out of view^of the totalisator, and m the outside paddock, also out of view of the totalisator. Other conditions are that no bookmakers' clerks be admitted to the racecourse; that no bookmakers ' shall be allowed upon the lawn or grandstand; that no bookmaker shall bet on any race later than five minutes before the advertised time ' for starting such race ; that any bookmaker committing a breach of these conditions, or of the Gaming and Lotteries Act, shall be liable to have his license cancelled, and m the event thereby he shall not be entitled to a refund of any portion of his license fee, and m addition thereto, shall? be liable to-be expelled from the racecourse. \ It; is stated that '-gum land,", near a railway. station, and within 14 or 20 miles of Auckland city, oan be bought at £1 per acre. The best part of the land is gently undulating and easily ploughable the soil on the more level portions rang! ing from a light, friable broivn sandy loam to a moderately heavy clay loam, resting on a loose sandstone or a fairly free cla y sub-soil. It works easily, it responds to cultivation m a marvellous manner, and with judicious manuring will yield nearly any variety . 6tf form ' crop. In its natural state, it is covered vwith manuka scrub and' fern, which has been burnt off so often' m the course of years that it presents a dwarfed and stunted appearanc&. It fis, furthermore, scarred .with the workings of gumdiggers, Avho, 1 for the. last 30 or more years, have been pot-holing land paddocking m. every direction. -The New Zealand Herald has re-, cently tried to . ascertain if this A land; w^ich can be bpuaht for £l ( .an^ acre, o r lass, can be. profitably worked.
