RAILWAY SERVICE.
(Per Press Association.) DUNEDIN, last night. '" The new Classification Bill has caused very pronounced ' dissatisfaction among all branches of the railway service locally. The men, when they recently ventilated their grievances, had built their hopes on the announced intended classification, but their hopes have been shattered. Men of the first division are disgusted with the treatment meted out to them, and the service throughout was to-day almost in a state of ferment at the proposal included in the new Bill. The position is considered to be aggra- ; , vated by the fact that the post and telegraph officers have scored so well. Stress | is "laid on the responsibilities of railway] servants as compared with post and telegraph servants. In regard to first divi-sion-officers there- is a marked improve-' ment as far as lads entering the service j are concerned, but a glance ahead and it is held to be sufficient to stop anyone from joining the railway service. It is contended that many senior men will leave the service. As to second division guards complain strongly. They have received sixpence rise, but the number to which that applies has been considerably'reduced to what it would have been if. the rise were given straight out ac- ( cording to the • present grading. The meeting of the first division was held this evening and resolutions strongly condemnatory of the new classification were passed.
