CONFLICT OF AUTHORITY.

STATE v. COMMONWEALTH. (Press Assn.— By Telegraph— Copyright). SYDNEY, August 22. The Federal Government has served an injunction on the : New South Wales Government. It calls upon the AttorneyGeneral to show cause why an injunction should not issue to restrain the Government from further interfering with imports whicb were not cleared at. the Customs, and why a declaration should not issue' compelling the return of the wire netting taken. The matter comes before the High Court to-morrow. The State Government will raise the question whether tliere exists a jurisdiction m the High Court, to deal with/ the matter under the Customs Act, and this will involve argument on the basis of the question whether the State Government is bound by the Act m any way. LONDON, August 22. The Daily Chronicle declares that Mr Carruthers' action is a remarkable symptom of the particularist feeling surviving m some States. (Received August 23, 10.16 a.m.) MELBOURNE, August 23. Sir W. Lyne, m reply to questions as to the wire seizure incident, stated that the ordinary process of law would be relied upon to support the authority of the Commonwealth.
