At the Kawatiri wreck inquiry Captain Crawford deposed that he thought with tho prevailing wind thc bar would be smooth. It proved very rough. It was then to 0 late t 0 turn back, and the only safety lay m going full steam ahead. He had previously gone m m rougher water Other captains, the pilot, and harbormaster were of the opinion that the water at the time of the wreck was not too rough t 0 prevent Captain Crawford bringing the Kawatiri m.
