The Molyneux river is feet 10 inches above normal at Alexandra. Apropos of the new trawling company about to be established here, £8000 out of £10,000 required is reliably promised. ] Tramway overcrowding is engaging ■ considerable attention at present. The, tramway manager, Mr Alexander, was called upon by tlie City Council to report j re thc purchase of eight large new cars, but he reported that while they would to a considerable extent prevent overcrowding, he opposed the purchase, because the result would be to add to the capital expenditure. Cr McDonald, who has been one of the foremost supporters of the additional large cars proposal, says the Tramways Committee do not consider it would be wise to face this extra expenditure, but seeing that the Electric Power and Lighting Committee are to take over our steam plant, this will mean crediting £8000 to £10,000 to the capital of the tramway department. Tlie proper thing to do would be to put that- money into eight large additional cars similar to the cross-seated bogie m use m Glasgow, which has a carrying capacity of 70. These cars open at the side, and can be kept open m fine weatlier and shut m cold weather. As soon as the Electric Power and Lighting Committee take over the steam plant, he proposed giving notice of motion tliat tlie money be put m extra cars of the type ho had mentioned. Then, again, it was anticipated that they would make from £5000 to £7000 out of the ! tramway service this year, and if tliey i went on at that rate it Avould not take long to pay for the additional cars out of

profits. The amount for the steam plant could be put into more cars, or els e tliey could provide so much for the purpose out of profits.
