THE JAPANESE QUESTION.

WASHINGTON, May 24. A renewal of the Japanese question growing out of the San Francisco school incident, and involving the treaty relations of the United States and Japan, is imminent. The present treaty expires m 1911. A campaign has heen opened for the renewal - of the existing liberal provisions regarding immigration Ambassador Aoki and the members of his staff go to the Pacific Coast next month to study the situation, and to ascertain whether it is true, as was recent, ly represented to Mr Roosevelt by visiting representatives from the Pacific Coast cities, that there is^ not a serious opposition to .the Japanese except at San Francisco. Portland, Seattle, and Los Angeles, it is said, are free from antagonism to the Japanese. . ■.- The Mikado's Government, it is feared here, may not desire to continue to acquiesce m the arrangement effected by Mr Roosevelt m Congress m regard to immigration, which excludes Japanese laborers, but is very liberal regarding other classes. Japan, however, m the light of subsequent knowledge, may be unwilling to have this included m a for- , mai treaty. Much importance is attached to Viscount Aoki's trip.
