(Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, last: night. Sydney O'Neill, oi / the buckjumping combination, was fined £3 'to-day for blackening the eye of Sydney Luella, the clown. . A somewhat important shipping deal took place this week, the Ford Shipping Line, Ltd., having purchased the whole of Mr Geo Niccois fleet o£ scows, .including; one .now building. The Ford Line will now consist of twelve, of the most modem a«d : up-to-date tinibercairying scows. The vessels purchased include the Curlew, Gannet, Seagull, Raiiger, and Moa (now building). The Ford Line have contracted with the Kauri Timber. Company for the carriage of all their timber from coast ports to Auckland for a number of years, including towage of logs. Since the visit of the Hon. J. A. Millar, Minister for Marine, to Auckland, there lias 'been renewed confidence m the i cow class of vessels. Wliilst m Auckland Mr Millar, by personal inspection and inquiry into scows, stated that lie was perfectly satisfied as to their safety and that liis opinion of! them had been> decidedly altered. Efforts are Ibeing made to refloat tue cutter Flora, which. 6ank off North Shore on Saturday morning, laden with shingle. NAPIER, last night. Owing to a paragraph, appearing m to-day's paper stating that the Government had refused >to accept a tender for the erection of baths at Tarawera, the Mayor and a very large and influential body of business people will wire to Messrs Fraser and Dillon, M's.H.R., urg ing them "to usa their best endeavors to get tlie amount for the erection of the baths replaced: on the Estimates and the work proceeded with. - ■ MASTEKTON, last night. At a 'meeting of the holiday committee of the Wairarapa Jlimployers' Association the following resolution was pae6ed : "That the committee strongly approves of the weekly half-holiday, being observed on Thursday as at present; and that the petition now being signed by shopkeepers and residents is heartily endorsed. . WELLINGTON, last night. In the Te Akau case m the Cpurt of Apepal Messrs Morison and Earl addressed the Court on behalf of plaintiffs, contending (1) that the Supremo Court had jurisdiction to prohibit the Native Appellate Court on the ground of bias, and (2) that the circumstances alleged m the statement of claim disclosed reasonable likelihood of unconscious biae on the part of Judge Browne, such as would justify the Supreme Court m interfering. Mr Skerrett replied and the Court reserved judgment • ASHBURTON, last night. - Patrick McDonnell stationmaster on theßanunga State collieries line, fell under a coal special when alighting from tue engine and both his legs were badly hurt. An inquest on the 'body of William Brown, who wa6 killed by a fall of earth at North-Easb Valley yesterday, was opened this morning, but after formal evidence had been given was adjourned until Tuesday next. •■ At a meeting of the Olagp centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic .Association to-night a letter was received from the New Zealand Council and the Canterbury centre m reference to the reconstitution of the Council, and it • was resolved that the previous decision; be adhered to, namely, that; the matter be referred to the next annual conference of centres. Th c Council's offer to Otago to hold this year's New Zealand Crocs-Coun-try Championship was accepted, the event to be held on Labor Day. INVERCARGILL, last night. The Southland Education Board discussed the Health Department's scheme for medical inspection, of school children. The Board doubts whether the work could be effectually done by teachers, and is arranging a conference with medical men to discuss the matter. The general opinion wag that legislation would be necessary. . ■.
